Services for Eugene "Gene" Childress, 87, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2017 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Jimmy Hedges and Pastor Scott Reed officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery.
Mr. Childress was born April 3, 1930 in Troup, Texas, the son of the late Mamie Sarah (Broach) and Hugh Thomas Childress. He passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, in a local hospital.

Mr. Childress was born April 3, 1930 in Troup, Texas, the son of the late Mamie Sarah (Broach) and Hugh Thomas Childress. He passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017, in a local hospital.
Mr. Childress was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a retired papermaker from Champion Paper Mill. Mr. Childress was a Deacon of Calvary Baptist Church and a Trustee for Redland Schools.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Shela and Greg Stoddard; sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Denise Childress and Stephen and Lynn Childress; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren (whom he gave candy to and who will dearly miss him); brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Lorraine Childress; sister, Jerry Simpson; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Childress was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Childress; and his brother, Billy Childress.
Pallbearers will be Mark Budke, Dwayne Childress, Dusty Stoddard, Jason Pitts, Drew Childress and Heath Brewer.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Adult V Sunday School Class of Calvary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
